Asian Australian Identities: Past, Present, Future

AASRN is excited to have AAI8 scheduled as part of the OzAsia’s 2023 ‘In Other Words’ program and in partnership with the University of Adelaide.

2023 marks 24 years since the start of AASRN in 1999. The network was set up as a space for academics, community researchers and activists, media and cultural workers, and anyone else interested in the area of Asian Australian Studies to come together and share experiences, ideas and work. Over this time the focus, community organisations and bodies, media and cultural representative groups, have grown and developed in many different ways. AAI8 will be an opportunity to look back at where Asian-Australian identities/studies have come from, where we are at, and where we might be headed in the future.

We invite papers and panels reflecting on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Representing contemporary Asian-Australian identities in art, culture, media, politics, and activism
  • Construction of Asian-Australian identities over the years in art, culture, media, politics and activism
  • Re-imagining Asian-Australian identities in contemporary Australia
  • Community, activist and academic groups and organisations focused on Asian Australian identities and Asian Australian studies
  • Diasporic consciousness: Asian-Australians in the world
